Travel informations of San Juan del Sur
We hope the traveler will find this portal informative, fun and useful. San Juan del Sur is a place of rich history and natural beauty with a vibrant local community. A few things to keep in mind for a safe, exciting, and relaxing stay are:
Do some prior planning through this portal and other sites to get an idea of what to expect regarding transport, hotels, activities, etc. If you are traveling through the airport, have your transport lined up before you arrive. You get a much better deal on rentals if reserved ahead of time. You hotel may provide free transfer but you must advise them you need the service. Airport taxis are convenient but the most expensive option. Consult with hotel front desk for activities and local safety issues. DO NOT bring travelers checks. DO NOT bring loads of cash. Credit cards are accepted in many places and banks can get you cash through your card. Teller machines also exist in many areas where you can withdraw cash. Use common sense when walking in town: avoid poorly lit areas, avoid desolate areas, and avoid walking around the beaches at night in dark areas. Stay accompanied when possible. Ask police or business staff for advice and directions - not just anyone on the street. Dollars (USD) are welcome in most places but other currencies must be converted to Cordoba or dollars. Bring your medication with you. Although pharmacies carry a wide range of medicines there is some medication not sold in the country. Ask first about handicap accessibility. Nicaragua is becoming very aware and responsive to this issue but has is not yet fully implemented handicap accessibility.
There is a local public health clinic: “Centro de Salud”. It is illustrated on the map but below the phone number is provided as well as in the town listing. The clinic is free but has limited facilities. For minor injuries and illnesses they do a fine job. For more serious injuries/conditions you may be taken to Rivas. For the best medical care in the country we recommend Vivian Pellas Hospital in Managua.
The local Police station is located in the Town hall center just outside of town (see map for location). The number is listed below as well as in the town listing. The local police are professional and helpful but their English is limited and other languages are non-existent.
Nicaragua has an extensive bus system. Consult our bus schedule to help plan a trip through the country.
